It's funny how all her friends are suddenly too busy to talk. It's funny how her mother won't return her calls. The long hours Frank's suddenly spending at work-- well, Rebecca doesn't really think it's funny, but she has to laugh.
She can't even delight in her daughter anymore. Daniella's too rough with her brother, and she won't listen. Rebecca spanks her and puts her in time-out, but nothing seems to penetrate.
She holds Michael close to her chest, humming a lullaby, and tries not to think about how alone she's suddenly become.
