The flowers smell sick. Appropriate, for a funeral, but the scent makes him nauseous. Another reminder, as if he needed one, that he doesn't belong here.
Michael wishes desperately that Danny had come with him, but he knows why she didn't. She'd hit something. He feels like hitting something himself. All these people he doesn't know, avoiding him, asking each other his name. A woman with red weeping eyes, two boys half-grown with Danny's chin-- they stare at him, at his cane, confusion in their eyes.
And his father.
He stands beside the coffin, and can't remember why he came.
