He's been thinking about Clara all day-- he does every January-- so it feels like a miracle when he sees her, standing at a bus stop, swamped in an enormous coat.
She's still so beautiful. They talk about nothing, their breath like clouds on the air, and he just drinks in her presence. He never stopped loving her. He almost says that.
Then she mentions her husband, and he realizes that enormous coat covers the bulge of pregnancy, and he gets it. All at once.
He never stopped loving her, and she never loved him at all.
