This is it.

They've told her that it's a boy-- a big one, strong and healthy. They've taken him away to clean him up. They'll bring him back in soon, wrapped in his little blue blanket, and she'll hold him, and she'll love him like she's supposed to.

This is it. This is when she'll be glad.

It's just as she imagined. The tiny squashed face, the small fists, the blue blanket soft against her hands as they hand him over. This is when she'll want him.

Melanie looks down at her son's face, holds her breath, and feels nothing.

Oh, that one last line. You can feel that Melanie's disappointed, not only in that she doesn't feel happy, but in herself, for not being happy.

Yeah. And a bit her disappointment in all the stories she's been fed, that this natural mothering instinct will kick in.
