In the long hot days of the summer after everything, Fatimah imagined leaving. She hated California summers at the best of times, heat rising from asphalt in shimmering waves; this summer, the worst of times, it burned the happiness from her life entirely. She dreamed of running, fleeing over the cracked sidewalks to somewhere cool and hidden.
Farid was silent, miserable, melting in the sun. Her children fled to the shadows for what little shelter they could get. She grew more miserable by the second.
She thought about leaving, every day.
She couldn't.
