Summary: Clara can see that her father is crying.

Clara realizes with a shock that her father is crying.
It's not really noticeable from where her mother is sitting, leaning back into him with her head against his shoulder. His voice is normal, warm and even as he reads to her; his hands are steady on her back and arms as he supports her and the book she holds.
But Clara is sitting frozen across the room, her own book forgotten in her lap; she can see that he's crying, tears creeping silently from the corners of his eyes.
It's then that she understands that her mother is dying.
