"Why are you packing your coat?"
Olivia jumps; her mother is suddenly right behind her. "I don't know." Her voice does not tremble, but it is close.
"You'll be home for fall break," her mother says, "and you don't have space. Leave the coat."
"All right." She pulls the coat out, lays it on her bed.
"Don't leave it there," her mother says. "Hang it up."
She does, and when her mother leaves, satisfied, she sits on the bed and shakes.
So she can't take the coat. She'll buy one in Massachusetts. It doesn't matter.
But she can't stop shaking.
