The damn lights don't work.
Hugh yields to the inevitable after a couple of tries, and lights a candle. These damn motels in the middle of nowhere are terrible places to stay, but he can usually rely on working lights. Not, apparently, mid-thunderstorm.
But he won't give up. Not now, not when he's so close.
There is a creased photograph he keeps in his wallet, of Olivia. She is thirteen, almost the last time he saw her, her smile big as the sky in the flickering light.
He touches her face, gently. He's so close.
He will not give up.
