Simon regrets leaving Aaron.
Not leaving New York. The city wass too noisy and dirty, too crowded and indifferent. Not that Ames is a small town, but it's certainly not Manhattan. And he loves Iowa.
He loves his family too. He loves their life together. And Aaron, despite the name, isn't Jewish, and that does matter to Simon, even though he was willing to let it go. He doesn't regret David. He doesn't regret their children.
But he misses Aaron, sometimes, the warmth of him, his easy smile. He misses him, he regrets that they had to end.
