It's just cold feet. That's what her mother says. Every girl gets nervous the night before her wedding. Every girl thinks about calling it off.
Melanie climbs the long shallow stairs up the side of the hill and pauses at the top, under the Japanese gate. Someone built it long ago, someone lonely and longing for home. For them it was a portal, a gateway to the familiar.
There is no familiar for her. All she can see ahead is uncertain ground.
She rests a hand on the red wood. Realistically, there's no stopping now.
She sighs, and turns back.
