Insanely hot. Maria can only lie naked on her sheets and sweat, listening to the cicadas scream outside. Lawrence is panting beside her, in the same humid boat.
She should be worried, she thinks vaguely. Her practice isn't quite getting off the ground, and public defending doesn't really pay, and she's six weeks pregnant and everything could implode at any minute, but it's so hot.
There's this too: she loves Lawrence with all her heart. If things do implode, well, they have each other.
Her hand creeps across the mattress and tangles with his.
