Title: Avalanche
Rating: PG
Summary: He's gone for good.
Warnings: none.
Notes: There was supposed to be a second half to this but I couldn't quite get it to work, so maybe later.
He's gone for good this time. Rebecca knows it in her bones. He's not coming back.
It's the same inevitable failure as a rigged carnival game, the same sinking feeling when the ring falls to the side, the same laughter from the onlookers. She could have tried as hard as she wanted, but she never could have won.
She hates him a little, for his cowardice-- she's the one who has to stay behind, explain it to their children and neighbors and families. But she loves him too, has always loved him, will always love him.
She should have known.
