Summer's grandfather died the winter after she turned ten, and for days she retreated into her room. It was just so difficult to handle all of it, her own pain and her mother's, overflowing through the house. She stayed in her room and ate what Papa brought her and leaned against the window, her forehead against the glass, not thinking.
Gus, old and creaky as he was, followed her in and occupied her lap more often than not, purring happily, and occasionally chewing gently on her arm. Summer didn't mind.
It was nice to have somebody there who wasn't hurting.
