Warnings: None.

The baby was nursing noisily, her small fists flailing gently against Joy's breast. This was her second child, her second daughter and she still hadn't got used to this feeling; a small life totally dependent on her own, so fragile and so fiercely loved. She resettled the both of them a little closer to the fire, possessive.

It was so quiet in the house; just the crackling of the fire, the occasional whuff of a dog, the baby sucking and the soft hiss of the snow falling outside. Chloe and Jax had taken the older kids into town for some shopping, so it was just Joy and her newborn daughter, quiet together on a winter night.

And there, the boots stomping on the front porch, that was Noah back from his chores. The porch door swung open, the dogs welcomed him home with whining and snuffling, and Noah muttered calming words to them. He'd be stripping off his boots and coat, shaking the snow out of his hair--he never would wear a hat--and patting the dogs here and there, distracted. She smiled, but did not look up. He'd be there soon enough.

The baby hiccuped against her breast, then took hold and began suckling again. The burp would be a bad one this time around. Good thing Joy had some experience and had brought a towel over.

Noah came in just then, walking quietly enough to not disturb the baby, but noisily enough to not disturb Joy. She tossed a smile over her shoulder at him, and smiled even wider when he knelt behind her, brushing a kiss across the back of her neck.

"How's my baby girl?" he asked, sliding both hands around her waist, as if she wouldn't notice if he moved slowly enough. The thought almost made her giggle.

"She's fine," she replied, leaning back against him. "Just hungry."

He detached one arm from her waist and reached up to stroke the baby's cheek. "She's gonna grow up big," he said, sounding proud. "Big and strong just like her sisters. Aren't you, baby girl? Yeah you are."

The baby curled one flailing fist around his finger, and stuck the end against her mouth. "I hope you washed your hands," Joy said, dryly.

"Always do." Noah tightened his arm around Joy's waist, tugging her just a little closer. "And how's my darlin'?"

She turned her head and tucked it into the curve of his jaw and neck. "Happy," she said, quietly.

He held her for a moment, his breathing rough against her skin, then said, "Me too."
