If Gail could change her children—and she isn't proud of this answer, but it's true—she might.
It's not that there's anything wrong with them. On the contrary, her children are perfect, or as close to it as possible while being, respectively, overly acquiescent, impossibly stubborn, and painfully shy. But she knows what the world will do to them.
It will take advantage of Aaron. It will attack and harass Ivy. And Summer, her poor Summer, it will brutalize Summer if it can. She can't protect them forever.
She might change her children.
She'd rather change the world.
