Title: Autumn
Rating: PG
Summary: Jake gets coffee and gets existential.
The coffee cart's little pumpkin was grinning at him. Jake wrinkled his nose.
He missed autumn in Ohio. The bright and lovely leaves, red and yellow, death dressed up in brilliant color. The air smelled like smoke, the stars sparkled ice-cold—sometimes the lawn frosted over.
It wasn't the same in New York. Here autumn meant jack o'lanterns and winter colds, chilblains and raspy throats. The air smelled like exhaust. Light drowned the stars.
The only pleasure he got these days was being first in line at the coffee cart. The man handed him his latte, and he turned away.
