When things got really bad at home, Michael used to sneak into Danny's room and make her tell him stories. It didn't drown out the fighting, but nothing did, and that wasn't the point anyway; the point was to cuddle close to his sister, hold her hand, and remember that she was there too.
They were out now, and she was far away, doing her Navy thing. They wrote and spoke on the phone, but it wasn't the same without her hand to hold.
He sent her a copy of his key anyway, every apartment he leased.
Just in case.
