"Does Summer want to be married?" Gina asked idly, one spring night at tea while a sudden storm poured rain outside and Ivy, perpetually cold any time before May, curled close to the fire with her cup in her hands.

She looked up and blinked at her lover, who sat in the window seat with her chin in her hand, staring out at the rain. "I don't know. She's never said anything about it. Why do you ask?"

"Only thinking," Gina said, and rose from the seat, crossed the room, and took the chair beside Ivy's. "I truly do want to have her to stay at the hall some time. And if she does want to be married, I would like to bring her into society." She bit her lip then, and smiled, ducked her head while a quick blush lit her cheeks. Ivy stared, fascinated. "That is, if your mother doesn't mind."

"She won't," Ivy said. "She hates society. I should think Summer would too." All the chattering noise, dozens if not hundreds of strangers to meet and be polite to, overwhelming sights and sounds and smells, oh, Summer would certainly hate it. She'd been to London but once and had been quite clear about her desire never to return.

Gina waved a hand. "London society, absolutely, she would despise it. I meant something on a rather smaller scale. There are several young ladies in the area that she might befriend, for example, and a number of quite eligible young men. Most of them are too young to wed yet, but given time..."

"Gina," Ivy said, half-laughing, "Summer is only eleven!"

"Yes," Gina replied, unexpectedly sober. "I began preparations for my come-out before I was old enough to walk. I'm not saying that Summer should do the same, only that... it takes a long time."

Suddenly unsettled, Ivy curled her hands closer around her cup. "It sounds...very sad," she said. "That your whole life should be aimed at getting a husband."

"It is," Gina said, that sorrow reflected in her eyes. "Many of my friends—and I think perhaps even Vanessa—they did not know what to do with themselves after they married. They had accomplished their goal; now what?" She shook her head. "In a way I think I am glad that we are the way we are, you and I and Joseph. We have... something more, even if we must keep it secret."

"Yes, we do," Ivy said firmly, and set her teacup aside, for she did not like Gina to be unhappy. "I think Summer will as well. You know her, you know how smart she is. We will have to find someone who will accept that about her. Someone who will love her just as she is."

Gina nodded, and to Ivy's relief her eyes brightened. "Yes. Absolutely. I want her as happy as we are. But of course, that can wait."

"Of course," Ivy agreed, and stood, pulling the ribbon loose from her hair. "And we are very happy, are we not?"

Gina laughed. "Very," she agreed, and pulled Ivy down to her.
