"Rebecca," her mother said, sadly, and she flinched, her hands going automatically to smooth down her dress. She resented herself even as she moved-- so what if her skirt had gotten a bit crumpled? They were only going to church; who cared what the neighbors thought? It wasn't like a formal procession.

Except it was, and she knew it, as her mother pulled her up and brushed at her skirts and fixed her hair, scolding in gentle, disappointed tones. It was all about making her mother look good. It was all about control.

She'd never do that to her kids.

Oh, I feel for Rebecca here, even though her mother means well--parents that prioritize their reputation over their kids are...not easy to deal with. Speaking from experience here.

Yeah. Rebecca's family is very "what will the neighbors think" and "we must look our best." She resents that so deeply that she winds up marrying Frank. So... good job, Miranda, it's all your fault.
