Title: Practice
Rating: PG-13, for cursing.
Summary: Ivy tries on a dress. Hilarity ensues.
AU: EPIC PIRATE AU
Notes: Inspired by my brand-new Faire garb and first-ever hoopskirt. If you've worn one, you'll understand.

Ivy batted irritably at the ruff around her neck, scratched her hand on the stiff embroidery of her skirt, tripped over the farthingale, and said, "This is ridiculous."

Her brother, leaning against the wall and trying valiantly to stifle laughter-- and keeping a more or less straight face, for which Ivy loved him dearly-- said, "I couldn't agree more, frankly. You really think you can pull this off?"

"I had better, hadn't I?" She straightened up, untangled the hoops beneath her voluminous skirts, and made a conscious effort to walk more slowly. That had a somewhat better result, although it still wasn't ideal. Damned good thing she'd had the foresight to do this in her cabin and not where any of the crew could see her (besides Aaron, but he'd helped to change her nappies; humiliation in front of him didn’t count anymore). "Bloody hell. I have no idea how Mother managed this."

Aaron shrugged. "Fashions change. I doubt she wore that exactly. I also doubt that she spent most of her life in breeches." He eyed his sister for a moment, then added, "Ladies generally don't."

"Like you'd know." She twitched irritably at the farthingale. "Thank the good Lord I never had to bother with one of these at home. Can you even fit through a doorway in this? And how do you sit down?"

"Carefully. I wouldn't try it if I were you."

Ivy shot a look of vicious dislike at the shoes she had to wear. "A whole evening standing on those, in this, dealing with high society. Oh, yes. This will be fun."

"Try not to kill anyone," Aaron advised her. "Not right then, anyway."

She smiled, showing all her teeth. "No, that's for later. I suppose if I get too angry with people I can mark them for death or at least maiming when we get to the actually fun part."

Aaron frowned. "Not too many murders, please. I did promise Da that neither one of us would get ourselves hanged."

"Do you enjoy destroying my dreams?" she asked, and turned to look in the mirror. She had no idea where Danny had gotten it (or the clothes, for that matter), but clearly her quartermaster was deserved an increase in her share of the loot. For this job, anyway.

At any rate, the dress's fabric, a subtly patterned brocade of a red a few shades darker than her hair, suited her; the puffed sleeves and enormous skirts did not. The less said about that damned ruff the better. And the bodice... Ivy gasped, and yanked at the bodice. "Sweet Jesus! Is it supposed to be this low?"

"No," Aaron said. "It's supposed to be lower. But it helps if you actually have breasts to fill it out."

Ivy didn't bother glaring at him for that. He'd just mysteriously find himself on deck-swabbing duty for the next... oh, three months should do it. "Hellfire and damnation," she said, feelingly. "This job had better be worth it."
