"So, Gail," Jack said, putting his knife down. "You said you had news?"
Gail, hungrier than she'd ever been, continued eating. "I broke up with Brad." She sneaked a glance at her father, and was amused to see him perk up.
"Oh? Should I be sorry?"
"No," she said, "I think congratulations are in order. He's a bastard."
Jack's eyes narrowed. "I don't disagree with you, but why the sudden change?"
"I told him I was pregnant and he called me a whore, so I dumped him. Dessert?"
Her father stared. "He... you're... what?"
Gail resigned herself to missing dessert.
