"Oh, for crying out loud!"
Jake glanced up from the bill he was reading in mild alarm. He hadn't heard anything break, and Olivia sounded annoyed more than anything else, but it could be one of the girls in trouble...
Across the table, Felicity looked up from her math homework, a worried frown creasing her forehead. He removed her from the list of annoyance-causing possibilities. "Daddy?" she asked. "Is Mommy okay?"
Jake listened; no swearing, crying, or things impacting walls had occurred, just a low-level, muted grumbling. "Mommy's fine, sweetheart," he said, and got up. "Finish your homework, and remember bedtime's in half an hour. Do you know where your sister is?"
Felicity shrugged, and bent her head to her homework again.
Okay, so Vivian was still on the list of possibilities. Vivian was peculiarly good at causing mayhem, too. Something about her innocent little face and the absolutely incredible speeds she could get up to. She was supposed to be in bed, but that didn't necessarily mean anything.
He checked, poking his head quickly into his daughters' room on his way to Olivia. Vivian was asleep in her crib, thumb in her mouth, eyelashes casting soft shadows on her cheek in the stripe of light from the doorway. She looked angelic-- which, despite him knowing very well it was an act, was an awfully convincing one-- and Jake let himself stare for a moment at the tiny miracle he'd helped create.
It was utterly overwhelming sometimes, having children.
Speaking of his children. Liss was doing her homework, Viv was peacefully asleep. As far as he was aware, Olivia hadn't had a particularly stressful or irritating day at work. Which meant one thing.
He knocked on their bedroom door but didn't wait for an answer. Instead, he came in, closed the door behind him, met Olivia's annoyed look as calmly as he could and said, "It's positive, then?"
"Yes, it's positive," she said. "Damn it."
He exhaled, and leaned back against the door. "Well then."
"I am not looking forward to having two toddlers at the same time," Olivia said, and sat down on the bed.
Jake thought about his phrasing for a moment before saying, carefully, "So you're not... too upset about it?"
Olivia smiled, grimly. "Oh, I'm upset. I'm the one who's going to be home with two babies all day, at least until Viv is old enough for preschool. You get to escape."
He sat down next to her but didn't touch her just yet, and refrained from pointing out that his job was worse than a whole roomful of toddlers. "You could get a job too, you know," he said, instead. "We're stable, but we're not that stable, not if we're having another kid." They hadn't planned on this for at least two years-- but then they hadn't planned on Liss, either, and she'd turned out well enough.
"I could barely handle a job with Liss," Olivia said, but she looked rather thoughtful. "I'll think about it. Part-time, though, and after the baby's born."
Which answered his other question, but he asked it anyway. "So you do want to keep..."
Olivia didn't let him finish. "Of course I do!" she exclaimed, sounding genuinely indignant. "I love our girls, and it's not like we hadn't planned on this. I'm just not looking forward to all the work." She paused, then added, "Or the sibling rivalry. I thought Liss and Viv were bad. How much worse is it going to be when they're closer together?"
Jake, who had a lot more experience in the matter of sibling relationships than Olivia did, said, "Honestly? Ammie and Laure were ten times worse than me and Ammie or me and Laure. It depends on their tempraments."
"So worse," Olivia said.
Given Viv's determined personality, he couldn't disagree. "Hah. Yes. Well, we'll deal with it."
"Mm," she said, then brightened. "And if all else fails we can ship them off to my father's for a week."
"Ooh," Jake said, considerably cheered by the thought. "Aren't we about due for that anyway? Viv has been asking about Grandpa."
She had relaxed considerably, and now tucked an arm through his. "I'll call Daddy in the morning. Have to let him know about number three anyway--" she patted her belly-- "so I might as well ask if we can dump the girls on him while I'm at it."
"A whole week to ourselves," Jake said, dreamily. Then rather more practically, "We'd better enjoy it. It'll be the last one for a while if we're going to have three kids."
Olivia snorted. "We can't enjoy it too much. That's how we wound up with three in the first place."
He shrugged, and gave her his best leer. "There are some benefits to you being already pregnant, you know."
"Ha," Olivia said, but she was smiling. "Ha. Very funny. Go put Liss to bed while I check on Viv, please." She stood, looked down at him, then grinned and added, "And we'll see about any further shenanigans later."
Jake grinned all the way to the kitchen, and not even Liss's whining could damp it.
