Title: Dear Arelie
Rating: PG.
Summary: Maria's first letter to Arelie.
Date: October 1981
Notes: none.
Dear Arelie:
I am so glad you wrote! We were so worried about you. Please please write back and tell me how you've been doing. Did you get settled? Have you got a job? A two-line note is not enough to reassure me that you're all right, especially after you disappeared like that.
You didn't have to leave like that. Lawrence and I would have... well, I suppose it doesn't matter anymore. I just hope you didn't feel that you had to leave, because you didn't. We would have loved to have you around-- speaking of, you are more than welcome to come and visit us at any time that you like. You know where we live, after all.
Ahava is growing so fast now. She's starting to walk already! Most children don't do that with any ease until they're at least a year old, and she's just blazing away. She falls sometimes, of course, but she cries for a little while and bounces right back up again. Lawrence thinks she's talking already, but I don't think so-- babies babble a lot, you know. I think all the "ma ma ma" and "da da da" are just her trying to imitate us.
It's really wonderful, though, hearing her say "ma ma." She does it when she's looking at me sometimes, and I--
I'm sorry. I hope this doesn't hurt you to hear. I just thought you might want to know how she's doing. Very well. She's been in the sixtieth and seventieth percentiles for her age in height and weight every single checkup, and so far she hasn't had so much of a sniffle. The usual teething and diaper rash, of course-- we just could not get rid of the diaper rash for a month or so there-- but nothing worrying.
She's such a good baby, Arelie. She was sleeping through the night at four months old. She still takes lots of naps, of course. She was practically no trouble over teething-- she isn't finished, but it's easing up now. She's like a little ray of sunshine. Our miracle.
I suppose I....
What I wanted to say, Arelie, is that she can be your miracle too. Just because you gave her to us does not mean you can't be involved in her life. You always, always have that option, and I want you to know that.
Please write back. I really want to hear how you're doing.
Love,
Maria
