letting go does not mean loving less

Title: letting go does not mean loving less
Rating: PG
Summary: Jake, missing his family.
Warnings: none.
Notes: Yellow-green, for the record, is the color of loneliness, jealousy, and sickness.

He missed his mother like the smell of her perfume, rosemary and fresh-baked cookies, comforting and somehow warm.

He couldn't hear his father anymore: a sermon, a scolding, a hearty laugh fading on the wind.

His sisters were tactile ghosts, Ammie pulling on his hair, Laure tugging on his shirt sleeve, both of them hugging him like they never wanted to let go.

All that winter, when he slept, he dreamt of Olivia, and the way her mouth tasted when she laughed against him.

Now the last of his girls is away to college, Elena already turning away when he glances in the rearview mirror; it's a sweeter pain, less aching, but it still hurts.
