Title: Gossip
Rating: PG.
Summary: Gossip drives society, and support makes all the difference.
Warnings: adultery and slut-shaming in background.
The neighbors comment on such a fine, healthy six month baby, whispering behind their hands and falling silent when she walks by. Gail finds it easy to ignore them. At the worst they think she and Nathan anticipated the wedding, and who can condemn them? They are right and properly married now, after all.
And if they knew the truth—what of it? Nathan knows, and he loves her all the same. With him beside her, she knows she can withstand anything.
So let them talk. She has her daughter, her husband and her life.
They can never take that.
--
Gina stays close by Olivia's side in the days immediately following her mother's flight. There's talk, so much talk, but she's gratified to hear it's largely sympathetic to Olivia—after all, they say, her mother is a whore but it's hardly her fault, such a sweet, well-behaved girl as she is.
Still, Gina stays by her, and glares into silence those few who dare speak ill of Olivia. Her mother's near destroyed her, and Gina will not allow cruel tongues to finish her.
Olivia may never marry, but at least her reputation will remain intact.
Gina will see to that.
--
The whispers get louder as Summer's belly grows. She is oblivious, wrapped up in them and their burgeoning child, and she doesn't care for society anyway but people are talking—Zack and Felipe don't know how much longer they can protect her.
They call in reinforcements.
Summer's mother arrives, ostensibly for her confinement, but they spend long hours closeted together and Summer's eyes are always brighter, after.
Lady Carew doesn't respond to their letter, but she makes quiet, brief appearances and the talk is always silenced, after.
Their son is born a month later, and no one can mar that.
