Dear Prudence

Title: Dear Prudence
Rating: PG.
Summary: Summer and the Beatles.
Notes: none

Dear Prudence
Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play?
Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day.

Some days are cold and dark, even with the sun shining and the wind blowing warm. Some days are too overwhelming for her to even contemplate the world. Some days she buries her head under the covers and wishes everything would go away.

There are some days, though, that begin that way, and then Lars comes to offer her a swimming lesson, or a day out on the paddleboats. Ivy shows her the new kittens at her office, or Aaron teaches her a new song. Gina brushes her hair, or does her nails.

She gives every day a chance, now.

Act Naturally
We'll make a film about a man that's sad and lonely
And all I gotta do is act naturally

Summer never feels as if she can be herself, anymore.

It's not that she wanted to live with her parents forever. Only people who can't function by themselves do that, and she can function. She can pretend that she's normal so easily that she fools everyone, so well they hate her for it when she messes up.

She misses home. She misses Mama and Papa and Aaron and Ivy and Lars, all the people who know her, who know what she's like and what she can't help.

She can't go back. She can only go forward.

But she misses them.

Ticket To Ride
I think I'm going to be sad, I think it's today
The girl that's driving me mad is going away

Connor is leaving her.

Looking back, she thinks she can see where he was leaving her all along, piece by piece withdrawing. If she were Gina, she could have seen it; could have seen his smiles turning cold, his hand lingering less on her. She could have prepared for this.

As it is, all she can do is stand with her head down and listen as he tries, so gently, to let her down, as he cuts little pieces out of her soul with every kind word he utters.

Connor is leaving her, and all she can do is bleed.

Within You Without You
Try to realise it's all within yourself
No one else can make you change

There's one thing the morgue has taught her-- she is who she is, and nothing can change that.

It's an odd sort of lesson to learn among the dead. She knows that. But she's always been odd. She's always gotten her education in offbeat places. She's always felt at home there.

She feels at home among the dead. She can help them. She, just as she is, can save them from obscurity, and the uncaring hands of those who know them not. She can do this, and no one else.

She is who she is, and nothing should change that.

Eight Days A Week
Eight days a week I love you
Eight days a week is not enough to show I care

Her boys are the joy of her life.

She should not call them boys, really. They are men, even her little Thomas, growing up so quickly. But they are hers; Zack and Felipe by their own choice and word, Thomas born from her body, raised in her heart. Her boys. She never thought she'd have them.

But she has them, now, and she will not let self-doubt destroy what she has. Her husbands, her son, she does not deserve them, but she will not let herself believe that.

They have chosen her, and she will not make that choice meaningless.

Yellow Submarine
And our friends are all aboard
Many more of them live next door
And the band begins to play....

They have family reunions sometimes, big noisy parties. Summer usually sits on a lawn chair in the shade and lets them come to her.

Her parents, warm and affectionate. Her brother and sister, tousling her hair, laughing with her. Her nieces and nephews, her cousins and friends, one by one, to talk of old times, tell jokes and stories, and just be with her, as she is.

Afterwards, she can go home with her son and her husbands, lie in their great bed, and know she is loved.

It's a good life, she thinks.

She is glad she has it.
