plip-plop
dark spots wet
the pavement, crowds
make a run for it.
She joins them. Grocery bags
bang against her thigh, leaving
bruises, like the ones he would leave
on her skin, and her children's, alike.
He won't bruise them ever again. She won't
allow it. No more than she will let
her hard-won freedom slip her grasp
or her fresh-bought apples sour
and rot in their green bags--
she nips inside just
as the rain starts
in earnest
rough and
clean.
