Ivy sits on the floor and watches him from the corner of her eye, uncertain. He's tugging at his tie. It's a stupid tie. Her dress is stupider.
She glances at Mama, whose hands are white-knuckled. She'll try, for Mama.
He comes over. She says hi, because she's trying.
He says hi back. They stare at each other.
"Your tie is ugly," she says.
"So's your dress."
Ivy straightens, delighted. Anyone who'll admit it is okay by her. "It is!" One more test. "Wanna watch with me?"
"Sure."
He'll watch The Little Mermaid with her.
Ivy decides she likes him.
