"Pregnant," Joanna said, flatly.

Doctor Maltez beamed at her and nodded. "Yes, indeed. I'd say about eight to ten weeks, judging by the date of your last period."

"That's ridiculous," Joanna said. She was surprised how much it hurt, really. "If this is a joke, it's a very cruel one."

The doctor's grin disappeared, replaced by a raised eyebrow. "Well, let's see. You're sexually active?"

"Yes," she said. "But that isn't..."

Doctor Maltez hummed. "Do you use birth control?"

"No," she said, "because..."

"Then it's very possible that you're pregnant," Doctor Maltez said. "I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner."

"I'm surprised it happened at all," Joanna said, between her teeth, "because I'm infertile."

Doctor Maltez sat back and eyed her. "The endometriosis? It would make it extremely difficult to become pregnant, I admit, especially given that you've had an ovary removed, but it's not impossible."

"That's not what my gynocologist said," Joanna said, feeling rather numb all of a sudden.

"If he was any kind of doctor, he used the word 'probably.'" Doctor Maltez rose and picked up her clipboard. "Joanna, I really don't know how to make you believe this, but you're definitely pregnant. If you'll wait just a moment, I'll write you a prescription for some prenatal vitamins and a referral for an obstrician. I'd like you to make an appointment as soon as possible, because you're a bit old to be doing this for the first time, but not to worry, everything's going to be fine."

Joanna stared at the doctor for a long moment before she burst into tears.

"Oh boy," Doctor Maltez said. Joanna heard her chair creak again, and then someone was patting her shoulders. "Hey, it's really going to be fine. Honest."

"I'm sorry," Joanna sobbed, and pressed her hands against her eyes. "I'm so sorry. I just..."

"Don't worry about it," Doctor Maltez said, gently. "If it'll make you feel any better, this is perfectly normal. I cried at the drop of a hat when I was pregnant with my youngest."

"This wasn't supposed to happen," Joanna said. She was getting the tears under control now, thank God. "I-I don't mean I'm not happy, but this wasn't supposed to happen. It's just..."

"Overwhelming?" she suggested.

Joanna nodded, suddenly miserable. "And Hugh, oh no, I don't know how..."

Doctor Maltez shrugged. "I can't help with that, but I do have some experience in the field. He'll probably be surprised but happy."

Surprised, yes. Happy? She didn't know. She didn't know if any child could live with the ghost of his lost daughter, didn't know if he could accept another child into his heart with that behind him.

But then, he'd accepted her, hadn't he? With all of her flaws and her weaknesses, he'd accepted her.

She could be certain of surprise. She'd work from there.

"You okay now?" Doctor Maltez asked.

Joanna nodded, and wiped at her eyes. "I think so. I'm sorry about that."

"Don't be," the doctor said, and got up. "Happens all the time. I'll get you that prescription and referral, and you can pick them up at the desk on the way out. Congratulations."

"Thank you," Joanna said, and touched her abdomen, lightly.

Pregnant.

If there was ever a thing to make her believe in miracles, this was it.
