He can't get them out. He thinks of her life before, the safety and the utter certainty of it, and knows he can't ask her to give that up for him. Why should she? What has he to give in return? An old ship and an old heart and nothing, nothing worth her.

"Safe journey," he says, instead, and watches her eyes dim.
