The doctor clucks over her yellow skin and distended stomach, but Yvonne is looking at her stretch marks, feeling strangely detached.
She feared those stretch marks so much, when she realized she was pregnant. That and the weight gain, the loss of her figure. If she'd known then what the child she'd conceived would do to her, she'd have feared very different things.
So strange. She gave her daughter life: Olivia gave her stretch marks and took everything. Now she's dying, her life destroyed, and her daughter is nowhere to be found.
All she has left is the stretch marks.
