Title: Tact. Learn You Some.
Rating: PG
Summary: The start of a beautiful friendship.
Date: Early 2006.
Notes: Just introducing Esther.
If Esther had learned one thing about Lars in the... it was about two weeks that she had known him now, it was that he liked to jump straight into awkward conversations with hardly a pause for breath. He certainly didn't bother easing people into things. It was probably that girl he hung around with-- she wasn't real familiar with tact either.
This time, meandering down the sidewalk in companionable silence with no particular destination in mind, he began, out of the blue, "What are you doing on Friday night? I'd like you to meet a friend of mine."
She stopped in her tracks and glared at him. "Lars! Are you setting me up? You know I don't like dating."
"Yeah, about that," Lars said, without bothering to stop walking. "Why?"
Esther rolled her eyes, but trotted to catch up with him. "Because sooner or later they always start pushing for sex. You know that, too."
"Yes, I do," Lars said. "I mean, why the no-sex policy?"
"I just don't like it," she said, and braced for the inevitable wisecrack.
"Okay," Lars said. "Just curious. I'd still like you to meet Aaron."
She stopped again, and stared at him. "That's it?"
Lars gave her a puzzled look-- actually stopped walking long enough to do it. "Should there be something more?"
"No 'oh, you haven't found the right person?' Or 'oh, you should see a doctor?'" Esther crossed her arms over her chest.
"Saying that would be stupid," Lars said, in his patient tone. "I try not to say things that are stupid. If you don't like sex, then you don't like sex."
She narrowed her eyes, suspicious. "Lars, everyone says something like that."
"Well, I'm not gonna. So what are you doing on Friday?"
"Jerk," she muttered, not terribly quietly. "I'm not doing anything on Friday."
"Good," Lars said, and beamed at her. "I'll tell Aaron you're coming, then."
Esther hit him with her purse.
