It had been growing for some time, but she knew for certain eight months in.
She hadn't meant for Nathan to meet Ivy as soon as he did, but there was a childcare emergency, and she needn't have worried; they loved each other immediately. Soon Ivy ran to him every time he walked in, soon he swept her up in his arms, planted a kiss on her cheek, helped her climb stairs as naturally as if she were his own child.
Gail, watching one day, caught herself wishing viciously that Ivy was his, and knew then that she loved him.
