Her utter bewilderment must be obvious, because the detective is being polite. Kind. She'd appreciate it, if she could feel.
All she can hear is Summer keening, an endless, horrible wailing. All she can see is the officers-- you need to come with us, ma'am-- all she can feel is dawning horror. She's standing at the edge of a roof, about to step off, and she can't turn back.
"I don't understand," she says. "I didn't do it."
They don't believe her. But it's all she can say.
