Ivy came running, tears smearing across her face, a small bird cupped in her hands. "It's hurt," she said. "Fix it!"
He looked down at it, and felt sick; the poor thing looked really bad. "I'll try," he said. "You leave it here and go get Dad, okay?" He needed an adult.
Ivy nodded and ran off, still crying. He crouched down over the bird, holding his breath.
When she came running back with their father, he was already shaking his head. "It's dead, Ivy, I'm sorry."
She burst into sobbing tears, and all he could do was hold her.

"It's hurt," Ivy said. "Fix it!"
Aaron looked down at his sister and the bird in her hands, suddenly no longer bored. "I'll try," he said, and needing a distraction, added, "You leave it here and go get Dad, okay?"
She ran off. He bent over the bird, reached down, and snapped its neck in one smooth twist.
The breaking bones felt like power.
Ivy came back dragging their father, and he shook his head, faking sorrow. "It's dead, Ivy." There was something else... oh, right. "I'm sorry."
She started to cry noisily; he turned back to the bird, breathless.
