There was something wrong with Summer.

Or perhaps wrong wasn't the correct word. Off was closer. Summer hadn't ever really been cheerful or open-- Ivy said she had trouble with people-- but she was quieter than usual, less often seen. And she sat in a particular way, her shoulders hunched in and her head ducked, as if she wanted to make herself insignificant, invisible.

Gina had sat like that, once upon a time, as her father stormed through the house after some small setback.

Ivy didn't think anything was wrong, so she said nothing, not just yet. But she watched.

--

Summer was crying.

Gina pushed the cabin door open. "Summer? Sweetheart, are you all right?"

Summer, still crying, said nothing, only held up her hair brush. Gina took it, and nearly dropped it at the strange weight. Frowning, she held it close to her eyes. It looked different, darker... she touched the bristles, and gasped when her hand came away black and sticky.

"Pitch?" she asked. "Who did this?"

Summer was sobbing too hard to answer. Gina cradled the girl against her chest, and knew that she would make the perpetrator pay.

All she had to do was find him.

--

The captain's whore sauntered across the deck, hips swaying. Jonathan Winters's mouth went dry.

She'd be his next target, he decided, bending to his scouring stone. Once he'd gotten rid of the girl, he'd go after her. Not in the same way, of course. Should be much easier. Whores were whores, and whores who serviced other women... she had to be desperate for a man.

He'd never had a high-class lady, besides. The captain... discouraged attentions to female prisoners, and where else would he get one? But you heard things.

Then her feet stopped before him, and he stopped thinking.

--

"Mr. Winters," she said, in her pleasant, soft voice. Like sugar. "Would you join me in my cabin, please?"

Bloody hell. He hadn't expected it to be this easy. Couldn't seem too eager, though, better to make her beg for it. "I dunno," he said, and made a show of looking about for the captain, even though he knew she was belowdecks. "Got work."

"I've spoken to Ivy," the whore said, waving a graceful hand. "She doesn't mind. Please."

Well, in that case. He smiled at her, and stood. "Why not, then."

He didn't see the edge in her smile.

--

She made tea. Women. But he humored her, and took a cup. Tasted like bitter water, but he set it down empty.

The whore smiled at him, sweet and pretty. "I'm so pleased you could join me, Mr. Winters. I have so much to ask you. I'm sure you must have such stories."

He smirked, leaned back. Gagging for it. "Got a few."

"Fascinating." She set her cup down untasted, and stood, crossed to him. "Could you perhaps tell me why you felt it necessary to bully Summer?"

He should have been surprised. He wasn't.

That was a bad sign.

--

The whore leaned back against the table. "So, you think she's useless," she said, contemplatively.

He shrugged. "Can't abide worthless people." He felt good now, floating and worry-free, and leered at her.

She ignored it, and took his hand in both of hers. "So you went after her?" she asked, wide-eyed, breathy.

"Got to get rid of her."

"Oh," she said. "I see." With one swift motion, she broke his finger.

He screamed, the pleasure haze seared away; tried to haul his hand free, but couldn't.

The bitch smiled seraphically at him. "What a pity," she said. "You seemed useful."

--

"Summer?" Gina knocked at the door of the cabin Summer shared with her brother. "Sweetheart, can I come in?"

There was a silence, then a dragging sound, and Summer peeked out. There was a chest just behind her; she must have had it shoved against the door. Gina's heart broke a little.

"It's all right," she said, and nodded at the chest. "You needn't do that anymore. I took care of it."

Summer didn't ask how, to her relief. Instead, she threw her arms around Gina and began to cry.

Gina rocked her slowly, and wished she'd hurt Winters more.
