Title: Crosses
Rating: PG.
Summary: When dealing with Captain Hirschfeld-Kendall, one would be wise to know how to pronounce her name, and also, you know, not try to shoot her.
AU: EPIC PIRATE AU
Notes: Takes place when Ivy is still tentatively courting Gina.

"Hirschfeld," Ivy muttered, glaring banefully at the fresh corpse. "Is that really so hard? Hirsch. Feld. Two syllables, not that difficult. Really?"

Danny prodded the body with a toe, and sighed. "Did you really-- and yes, I know how strange this sounds coming from me-- have to blow a hole in him because he couldn't say your name right?"

"That wasn't why I shot him," Ivy said. "I shot him because he was going to shoot me, and really, there was no call for that. I was going to pay him fair and square."

"Sure you were," Danny said.

Ivy scowled. "What was that?"

Danny grinned. "Sure you were, Captain."

"Much better." Ivy grinned herself. "And I really was this time. I even brought the money and everything." She patted her hip, which jingled.

Danny accepted that with a little nod. "So why'd you want to meet in a graveyard if you were going to pay him? I thought I was supposed to knock him upside the head and then we'd drop him in with one of these poor saps." She took in the headstones and fresh graves around them with a single, broad sweep of her arm.

Ivy frowned, thoughtfully. "You know, I didn't even think of that? It's a thought for next time. Anyway, he requested the meeting be here. I thought so we'd look like mourners." The frown became less thoughtful and more wrathful as she turned it on the corpse. "Guess he was planning something like that. Idiot."

"Guess so," Danny agreed, swinging her club. "Well, can we drop him in somebody's grave and go, then? Someone probably heard that shot."

"Nobody who'd care," Ivy said, but she bent down and grabbed the corpse's legs. Danny grabbed the arms, and with a little effort they hauled him over to a newly dug grave and dropped him in.

Ivy straightened up and dusted off her hands. "There. With any luck no one will miss him until morning, and we'll be long gone by then."

"We should probably cover him up a bit," Danny pointed out. "You know, so's it's not so obvious that dear old Uncle Charles is sharing his eternal resting place."

"A good idea. You're just a fount of them today, Danny." Ivy sat down on a nearby headstone and played with the intricately carved little box that she'd taken from the corpse just before she shot him.

Danny, standing by the grave, arched an eyebrow. "What is that?"

"Present for Gina," Ivy said. "See, I told you I was going to pay for it."

That... actually made a lot more sense, now. Ivy was generally adverse to paying for anything, but Gina had been raised in a somewhat more civilized environment and preferred that her jewelry not be stolen.

Unless, of course, a particularly pretty piece turned up on a raid. Gina wasn't stupid.

"Can I see?" Danny asked, curious.

Ivy shrugged, and opened the box. A delicate gold necklace lay against a padded velvet cushion, as if the merest touch of crude wood would break it. The chain was an intricately braided rope of three different golds, with sapphires hanging from it at regular intervals. It was simpler than the heavier, more elaborate pieces currently in vogue-- it had probably been made in Elizabeth's reign; the queen had favored that slim, pretty style-- but it was beautiful, and it seemed made for Gina's coloring.

"Do you think she'll like it?" Ivy asked, worry writ large on her face.

Danny snorted. She'd been sailing with Ivy for years, and never once had she seen the captain such an anxious, vulnerable mess over anything, let alone a girl. It was hilarious. "I want to wear it," she replied. "And I don't do that kind of thing. Yes, she'll like it."

"Good," Ivy said, and closed the box. "Good. I hope you're right."

Danny refrained from observing that Gina had already run away with Ivy, which any sensible person would agree meant that she liked her already without the need for elaborate presents. Ivy wouldn't listen, and on the off chance she did, Gina wouldn't thank Danny for it. "I am always right, Captain," she said, instead, and indicated the grave. "Are we going to bury him or what?"

"What's this we?" Ivy asked, and when Danny scowled, pointed at her hat. "Captain, Sierbenski. Get to it."

"I hate you."

Ivy raised an eyebrow.

Danny scowled harder. "I hate you, Captain," she said, and started digging.
